Group 1 – these Stones are at a church, churchyard or manse – or a church/chapel is nearby.
This grouping enables analyses to identify and understand any relationships between a Symbol Stone and the local built and natural environment. Perhaps association with a Saint might lead towards the dating of a Stone and the introduction to/of Christianity. This approach was taken to see if there are any common threads within each Set then across all of them. An indication of whether a Stone is in a raised or open area was added.
Group 1 has been divided into the different combinations of proximity to water and association with a Saint (or not) – giving 4 Sets. After the synopsis in each Set there are Observations in a linked PDF:-
Set 1 – Stones within proximity of water and having an association with a Saint. Observations for Set 1
Set 2 – Stones within proximity of water but not having an association with a Saint. Observations for Set 2
Set 3 – Stones not within proximity of water but having an association with a Saint. Observations for Set 3
Set 4 – Stones not within proximity of water nor having an association with a Saint. Observations for Set 4
The outputs from the Group 1 and 2 analyses are reflected in Overall Observations and Evaluation
